Hi all,

I’m part of a moms’ email group in Boulder. People use it to buy/sell equipment, pose queries for professionals/childcare, and other things. A mom wrote yesterday and said she’d heard about the new Valmont Bike Park, and could anyone tell her more about it as she thought her 7 year old might like it. The response was overwhelmingly positive and very cool to read so I thought I’d share:
Valmont Bike Park is amazing! Both my kids (girl- almost 7 and boy- just 3) LOVE it. There are a few paved paths and then plenty of single track that is suitable for little kids. They can also watch the "big kids" catching air at the trick parks. And there is a little play area (right next to the bathrooms) with a little climbing structure and a few spinny things if they need a break from the bikes. Definitely worth checking out, although I highly recommend you ride along with them. :)

The new Valmont Bike Park is fantastic! I have been there several times with my 3 year old son on his new pedal bike (actually the same week he learned how to ride it and we found plenty of trails he could ride). It's very family oriented, you do not need to get anywhere near the big jumps, and there are a variety of marked trails by skill level. Stay on the south side of the park, start with the green trails or Skillz Loop and progress as you feel comfortable. When we have gone, we have seen all ages and all abilities. There are restrooms, a concessions vendor and a small playground. The main parking lot on the west side fills up so don't forget about the one along Valmont near the dog park. Last time we rode it was nearly empty and the other one was completely full.

We went Sunday and my 4 year old had a blast! The Dirt 101 was perfect for him on a Strider. Skip the Tot Lot, it is just a few cement circles, although there is a park there. The only negative was a serious lack of shade. It would be nice if there were a few shelters to cool off in. Have fun!

I agree with Erin our 5 & 7 yr olds love all of it. My husband was there with them for 2.5hrs this morning. Our 5 yr old daughter only got a bike with gears two weeks ago but so enjoys it! I bet your child will love it!

We've been twice (this morning included) and LOVE it! My 4 year old rides and does 75% of the park, my 3 year old is on the strider and has a ton of fun, and I push my 1 year old in the BOB. I feel quite comfortable letting my 4 year old rider faster and ahead and circle back and check in. We spent 3 hours there this morning with a pack lunch and had a blast!

We've gone and I have a 4 year old and 21 mo old. There are plenty of easy trails a 7 year old would LOVE! My four year old still uses training wheels and its totally not really training wheel friendly (uneven and sometimes narrow). School age/older kids would DEFINITELY love it!

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery but having a project highlighted in such a way and totally unsolicited is perhaps a higher form at least in realm of landscape architecture!

Custom Bike Racks by BHA Design - Eat Greener Denver

BHA Design is pleased to announce their recent collaboration with Eat Greener Denver in designing their new bicycle racks.

Eat Greener Denver is an association of locally-owned, independent restaurants that are stewards for sustainable action in the restaurant industry. Eat Greener Denver now teams up with more than 30 local and national vendors dedicated to furthering green initiatives in their four walls.

Earlier this year, Eat Greener Denver organized a fundraiser with the hope that they could raise enough money to fund a community service project. Through their efforts, and the generous support of the Denver community, they were able to raise enough money to create a real impact. Ultimately the group decided to use the funds to promote bicycle riding in Denver.

Adam Schlegel, a member of Eat Greener Denver and one of the owners of Snooze Eatery, discovered that the new bike racks in Downtown Fort Collins were designed by BHA Design. So he contacted BHA to see if we could assist them in developing a fun new bike rack concept.
It was during that first phone call with Adam Schlegel that we dreamed up the idea of a “Fork Rack” - and it stuck! BHA Design is excited to announce that Eat Greener Denver purchased twenty Fork Racks which they plan to place in locations throughout downtown Denver. The first nine Fork Bike Racks have been installed with the others not far behind.

Now that Al Gore has warned us all of our doom thanks to his film “An Inconvenient Truth,” it’s finally time to put everything else aside and focus on sustaining our earth. Or is it? Consumers are being called on more than ever to do the “best” possible things they can for the environment. But companies are channeling consumer’s desire to “save the earth” into highly marketable sales niches. Businesses and organizations like King Soopers, the Colorado Eagles, and automobile manufacturers have put their trademark on “reusable, environmentally friendly products and practices.” The term sustainability has gotten lost in the public “Green Movement.” This has, in turn, occluded its true origins in niche professional settings like landscape architecture and ecology. Society’s definition of sustainability needs to return to its roots in designed landscapes while being revitalized to encourage the implementation of outdoor experiences that are not only good for the environment but also work to achieve the needs of its users.

Sites that provide a vast array of ecological benefits, but lack the ability to meet people’s needs are the world’s cloud forests. These steep montane forests, including those in Monteverde, Costa Rica and La Palma, Canary Islands, extract billions of gallons of water from the clouds allowing surrounding ecosystems to benefit from it (Roach 2001). Phillip Bubb, director of the Tropical Montane Cloud Forest Initiative states, “Cloud forests…capture water that would otherwise never fall to the ground as rain.” (Roach 2001) Cloud forests are incredibly diverse biologically. It is estimated that only about 20 percent of the various plant and animal species in cloud forests have been accounted for (Roach 2001). These thriving ecological sites do wonders for maintaining a diverse population of plants and animals as well as providing the surrounding ecosystems with an abundance of water, but could they ever meet the needs of people? While cloud forests are home to some indigenous people that live in and around them, they would never be able to meet the needs of people in masses. The fragility of the ecosystem that exists within and around these cloud forests could never support the space needed for large amounts of people to live and would be destroyed with any significant influx. While these sites provide many beneficial ecological functions, it would cease to function as a site of this caliber if human needs were to take priority.

A dramatic increase in human population has led to an increased concern regarding ecology. Accepting that humans have basic needs that must be met, more people equal more needs to meet. Abraham Maslow has devised a hierarchical system for classifying human needs into two categories: connotative and cognitive (Maslow 1970). John Motloch, in his text Introduction to Landscape Design, summarizes Maslow’s human needs classification: “Physiological needs, such as hunger, thirst and the need for rest; safety needs, including the need for security, stability, and protection from fear and chaos, and so forth; belongingness and love needs, including the need to give feelings and receive satisfaction; esteem needs, including the need to feel self-esteem and the esteem of others; and self-actualization needs, to feel self-fulfillment.” (Motloch 2001, 245)

Cognitive needs are defined as a need to know and understand, as well as aesthetic needs. It is also believed that the most basic of connotative needs must be met first before any other needs can be met (Maslow 1970). Realizing that in order to meet people’s basic needs, space is required. Shelter, in the form of buildings, requires an obvious need for space. Food and crop production requires perhaps a less obvious need for space. The question then becomes how can we blend the space required to meet the basic needs of people into a site without deteriorating its ecological value?
John Motloch describes placeness. He states, “Placeness occurs when a setting becomes functionally, culturally, aesthetically, and associationally meaningful.” (Motloch 2001, 245) This is the idea that well designed sites have many aspects and become meaningful to people on many different levels. Motloch states that an individual’s perceived quality of life can be greatly increased by an intriguing landscape experience. Motloch’s ideas are seen very directly in one of Michael Van Valkenburgh’s projects.

The Allegheny Riverfront Park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) illustrates that ecological needs can be met alongside human needs. MVVA’s goals in designing this park were to increase people’s access to the water, address on-site ecological issues, and make it a place of aesthetic interest to increase its use. Relating to Motloch’s idea of placeness; the Allegheny Riverfront Park functions aesthetically, by drawing people to the river to experience its reed-in-laid concrete and its shiny, eye-catching copper railing. The site functions culturally by acknowledging people’s proximity and attraction to water as it maximizes the opportunity to be close to the shore. It is also functionally effective as it provides respite from the busy city atmosphere and streets. The site is ecologically sensitive to the changing tides and ice flows that occur as evidenced by the utilization of plants that recover well after fluctuating temperatures and floods. The Allegheny Riverfront Park has experienced increased user population proving that people have established a positive sense-of-place with the park. This, in turn, increases the perceived quality of life of these users. The design of the park has effectively blended the issues of ecological sustainability and aesthetics to illustrate a design process that encompasses nearly all conceivable aspects of the site.

In his book entitled Design for Ecological Democracy, Randolph Hester talks about promoting a sense of community among people. He writes, “Facilities like parks, schools, swimming pools, gyms, and movie theaters, used to be provided only in the public realm, but now are routinely afforded privately, making civic engagement less essential.” (Hester 2006, 3) He worries that this independent privatization has led to a disassociation with ecology. Hester states, “Ecological democracy…is government by the people emphasizing direct, hands-on involvement. Actions are guided by understanding natural processes and social relationships within our locality and the larger environmental context.” (Hester 2006, 4) Hester also states that people will likely protect a site if they understand why the natural processes are being protected. He also speaks of enabling, resilient, and impelling form that must take place in our cities and landscapes (Hester 2006, 8). Enabling form relates to a design that enables people to get to know each other by chance meetings, thus increasing communication and socialization skills. Resilient form relates to efficient design that works with, not against, the ecological processes taking place on site. Impelling form relates to a design that enriches the lives of people instead of detracting from them, allowing people to establish a positive identity with their community (Hester 2006, 8). The sense of community, ecological democracy, and the enabling, resilient, and impelling forms, are witnessed in a project by BNIM Architects and Burt Hill Inc.

The Noisette Community project in Charleston, South Carolina is meant to function as a city inside a city. They operate under several principles that acknowledge that all resources are limited and that places must be beautiful to form a direct interest. Hester’s enabling form takes shape as the design incorporates promoting accidental meetings and conversation, increasing socialization. When designing the Noisette Community, BNIM and Burt Hill promoted a strong push for education with the hope that it would lead to direct community involvement. Through this interaction the hope is that the on-site ecological functions will not only be recognized, but preserved as well. As community interest and involvement are paired with resilient form, the Noisette Community can hope to sustain the prominent ecological functions of the site. This community will also be impelling to its inhabitants. The idea of slightly decreased privatization, coupled with slightly increased community involvement will yield a much higher interest in individual’s identity from this ecologically sustainable community.

The word sustainability lends itself to a very broad interpretation. The Allegheny Riverfront Park and the Noisette Community provide the best blend of cultural and ecological sustainability as they address placeness and perceived quality of life as well as enabling, resilient, and impelling form. Together, these two places have proven that if an effective design process is executed, it will yield results that, in turn, embody the true meaning of sustainability. Addressing human needs and their relationship to ecologic processes will create an overlap that allows the experience to flourish.

Sustainable Urban Design at Mitchell Block Achieves LEED Gold

The newly completed Mitchell Block project in downtown Fort Collins will be a northern Colorado showcase of urban design and sustainable design.Earth tone materials, planting beds, and flower pots arranged in fluid lines contrast the often harsh grid and materials of the urban environment, creating a warm and inviting urban space for all who pass by. A music themed alley including larger-than-life granite piano keys and flowing sheet music compliment a painted wall mural two stories tall that pedestrians can explore while strolling along this alley shortcut.Mitchell Block is a LEED Gold project that uses sustainable site materials and amenities including multiple rain gardens and a tree filter, all designed to clean storm water of contaminants prior to releasing the water into the city storm system. The on street vehicular parking occurs on permeable pavers that provide numerous ecological benefits, and multiple vehicular parking stalls are designated for low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles in an effort to encourage the use of such vehicles.

Water Wise Landscapes in the Western United States - 2009

The constructed landscape plays a major role in water use in the semi-arid west. Ornamental Landscaping in Colorado can consume as much water per acre as an acre of agricultural cropland. Our designed water use largely stems for a historic landscape precedent that started in England and Europe, came across the Atlantic with the original colonists, and then worked its way west as pioneers gradually expanded into the western regions of the country. England, with an annual rainfall of 36 inches represents two to four times the average rainfall of locations such as Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

The historic landscape design approach for the western region of the US has largely been represented by a re-creation of the European landscape, including the typical plant palette found in European countries. As settlers moved across the United States they brought with them the same styles and plants the colonists knew from their home country. Bluegrass lawn became the standard turf and the typical residential and commercial landscape was covered in water loving shrubs and trees which were not native to the western United States. The result has been the development of a landscape dependent on substantially more irrigation water than our typical rainfall provides each year.

The burden of providing this additional water has translated as added infrastructure in many ways. Water resources have had to be developed from new sources such as expensive and environmentally challenging diversion projects or significant pipelines and dams. Water treatment plants have been constructed and sized to meet water demand and water pipes to neighborhoods have required sizing to meet almost twice the demand that would have been required with a purely native landscape. Additionally this landscape approach has necessitated additional maintenance including mowing, fertilization, herbicides and aeration, all of which are detrimental to the environment. The irony is that it is not necessary and can be accomplished at a fraction of the cost both in real dollars and environmentally.

Approaching the design of landscape by considering the use of natives can greatly enhance the chances for a landscape that is low in water use and hardier. Through an appropriate western landscape we can create unique and distinctive landscapes which reduce infrastructure demand, lower water use, eliminate mowing, and eliminate the need for fertilizers and herbicides. At the same time we can make our landscape aesthetically and ecologically more pleasing. How much more interesting would it be to live in a land that feels indigenous and requires little or no maintenance?

BHA Design today is making significant strides in the natural landscape. Through incorporating Xeriscape principles, biomimicry, permaculture, LEED, and other sound installation practices, BHA is redefining the constructed Colorado Landscape. Our integrated approach to the design of the land brings us together with architects, horticulturists, botanists, reclamation specialists, and ecologists in developing landscape designs which respect the needs of the developing world while simultaneously protecting, restoring, and even enhancing the land. And we do this while reducing our client’s needs for expensive maintenance activities and our community’s needs to add expensive water infrastructure.

Through the processes described above our dependence on water for irrigation can easily be reduced in half over the typical landscape, thereby protecting and preserving this precious resource.

We are dedicated to improving the state of the art in health care design. Therapeutic garden design and landscape is quickly becoming standard equipment in today's health care facilities. BHA Design is at the forefront of evidence based therapeutic landscape design and implementation.

Therapeutic landscape design is not limited to health care facilities only. Parks and urban spaces can also function as healing spaces. Therapeutic gardens can range from passive to active healing space. The simple disconnection from sterile, drab, stuffy interior working environments to organic, fresh and colorful open air environments can make all the difference in your stress level and improve your level of optimism. In the case of high stress hospital environments, accessible landscape spaces can afford doctors, nurses, staff, patients and family opportunities to recharge and reduce stress. When these spaces incorporate specific evidence based therapeutic design principals, the results can be impressive.

The effects of environment have long been appreciated by ancient cultures however the wisdom of the ages often escapes contemporary design and development. As therapeutic garden designers, we strive to address the healing benefits of the environment with every project that we work on.

Therapeutic design is one of our core values and it is our desire to implement evidence based, effective, sustainable and pleasant therapeutic design into every project, especially hospitals and elderly care facilities.

On-Street Bike Racks Installed!

Last Friday, March 20, 09, M&R Fabricators installed five new high capacity on-street bike racks in downtown Fort Collins. M&R Fabricators teamed up with BHA Design to submit a proposal for the new bike racks several weeks ago. Fortunately we won the design competition and subsequently completed the design and construction of the five bike racks. The project was jointly sponsored by the City of Fort Collins and New Belgium Brewery. If you haven't seen these fun racks yet we recommend that you cruise to Old Town Fort Collins on your super cool cruiser bike and lock up to the new racks!

CIPO Utility vs. Art - Concrete Form Liner Outfall

Who said that head walls look bad? We did. So we worked with the City of Fort Collins, Anderson Consulting Engineers and Ayres & Associates to develop a new approach to head wall design and aesthetics.

With the use of integral colored concrete and a custom form liner that was artistically created by Barb McKee, we were able to create unique and appealing forms that would otherwise look utilitarian and out of place in the naturalized environment of the CIPO stormwater system.

BHA Design specializes in working with engineers and city departments to create new and aesthetically appropriate solutions and alternatives to standard design problems. We are able to impliment the designed principles of landscape architecture into many design problems to create integrated, sustainable design solutions that reflect the natural context and cultural climate of a project and it's location.

Evidence Based Therapeutic Garden Design

An emerging trend in the healthcare industry is the incorporation of evidence-based therapeutic gardens. As an added patient service therapeutic gardens can be incorporated at relatively low cost while adding measurable positive outcomes through appropriate treatment protocols. Virtually all patient populations can benefit from properly designed gardens. The ideal garden setting incorporates appropriate design strategies and is balanced with a Horticultural Therapist (HT). The HT interacts with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, cardiologists and other caregivers to develop treatment protocols that are appropriate for given patient populations. Therapeutic gardens are excellent for staff and visitor stress reduction as well. As little as three minutes in an outdoor garden space can provide lowered blood pressure and lowered pulse rate.

Once the home of infamous lawman Wyatt Earp, Dodge City was the center of the 19th Century cattle industry. It also gained notoriety for being the center of the Wild West.

Dodge City hired BHA Design to design distinctive entry gateways that personified the city's Wild West image. BHA designed eye-catching gateway logos for the city by incorporating images of cowboys, longhorn steer, and railroad scenes. The entryways truly evoke a spirited Wild West theme.

The healing and non-healing effects of our environment has long been appreciated by ancient cultures, yet is rarely apparent in contemporary design and development. We strive to address the healing benefits of the environment with every project that we work on. A healthy environment begets healthy people. New hospitals and therapeutic facilities are necessary as the American population ages. As "therapeutic" is one of our core values, it is our desire to implement evidence-based therapeutic design into every project, especially hospitals and elderly care facilities.
